FAQ
What is the meaning for Hyalinum ?
Hyalinum is the neutral form of the latin adjective meaning « transparent as glass ».
How to help me ?
I started that project in October 2019 after stopping my studies in september 2019 to dedicate myself fully to that adventure which is the video game.
As I have been working full time on this game for the last 6 months and having spent over 700$ in that activity through the last year, any financial help would be most appreciated for the future because the achievement of the final project will strongly depend upon the amount collected with that game.
Without you, I won’t be able to go on….
The game will be released on Itch.io and Steam in 2021.
Why didn’t I choose to carry out the game in 1 part ?
Originatelly, the part 1 had to be much shorter.
I decided to leave my first project in pause because I realised that it was irrealistic and much too long so I decided to separate it in two parts.
First of all, to find my audience, this is my biggest problem because this game is not dedicated to anyone and will only exist with the help of people who are going to be able to appreciate it.
Secondly, I realised this project is as huge as the former one.
I was not aware of the amount of work required because before that, I only had constructed small games since I started developing on Unity in january 2018.
As I was playing with Lucas Pope’s and Jonathan Blow’s games I thought to myself naivly that achieving this kind of game would be possible without considering I am a beginner.
Why the development of this 20 minutes game has been so long ?
Obviously, 6 months for developing this game has been very long, especially when you manage alone, constantly ocillating between joy and dissapointment. Developing a game is restless……
Formerly, duration of part 1 was to be 10 minutes maximum. A simple marche with a conclusion. After deciding to create that part 1 in order to enter on the independent trade, I realised those 10 mn were boring and did not alow to reveal the plot and moreover, did not show my capacities( even if they are humble, I nevertheless wanted to show what I was able to do). Then I imaginated a small scenario for that little walk.
But still, this is not explaining those 6 months…..
To sum up, as I said before I did everything on my own : 3D, coding, sounds,….. lacking some financial help .
Only the moon and 2 sounds that I modified later were not of me.
The moon comes from : https://pixabay.com/fr/photos/l-astronomie-pleine-lune-luna-lune-1869760/
Two sounds I modified come from : https://www.sounddsigners.org and https://lasonotheque.org/.
Moreover this work is very polyvalent , I made lots of beginners’s mistakes, as recording sounds too early that I had to suppress twice, include some mecanics I had to supress later, create a complete scenary with totally different mecanics that was adding some additional game timing…. I understood that as an independent I had to focus on the very elements of the game even if it means giving up some others that could make me loosing time( Thanks to Mr Fumito Ueda and Mr Jenovan Chen, there are some very interesting conferences available about that subject on internet and more specifically on YouTube and GDC’s youtube channel).
I consider all these big mistakes made me loose one month of work .
For instance, I lost almost 30 hours encoding one system on a camera on which I was stuck,…. one month later I solved it in only and hour and a half !
It is pointless doing something if you don’t have the knowledge.
Patience is then a quality you develop in making games where you learn constantly.
You must keep in mind the scale you are into, in order be able to complete your project.
What kind of game would I like to create ?
To be honest, I like Walking Simulators, the narrative games, to focus on the narration without forgetting the special features of the video game. But I also like stealth, puzzle and horror games.
Nevertheless I would like to create more traditional games to start my career.
I know this one is experimental and I will talk about the game I will make further in this post.
Is HYALINUM part 2 also going to be a Walking Simulator ?
Not at all.
I wouldn’t like to disclose the following... But you probably guessed, the part 2 is taking place in a confinated place. You will have to move in a 3D environment .
Hyalinum : Introduction is not only a Walking Simulator, there is a few mechanics and I prefer to use the word Exploration even if Walking Simulator is being used in the description.
I don’t want to create interactive stories, I absolutely want to have mechanics that evolve with the story.
I want to make good games.
The part two will have game mechanics but nothing is settled.
I wrote everything on my own (gameplay, scenario, dialogues, conception of the place and second character). I am on the way to write the dialogue again before launch myself into the following of the project.
All I can definitely say is that a new character will come on stage.
What are the assets I used ?
My game was created on Unity 2019.2.
I have been using assets as Beautify, Slate, Flatkit, and Standard Unity Asset.
